type dingbats coverType Dingbats magazine cover

For this magazine cover I chose to use a strong monochromatic color scheme that would complement and set off the typography. The point of the cover was to fully represent the typographic theme of the magazine, so I pushed my typography to the limit, and chose an image that would work with that theme.

The target audience for the magazine was high school students who might be interested in studying Graphic Communications at TMCC, so I gave my cover an "in your face" feel that would grab their attention.

Most of my classmates were using full color design schemes for their inside spreads for the Type Dingbats magazine, so I decided to do something a little different. The subject of the magazine was supposed to be about typography, so I decided to push that concept, and have my design represent typography and nothing else. I achieved the stark and powerful layout that I set out to create, and I think that it is my strongest piece to date.

The self portrait that I created out of type was representative of the endless possibilities for creating image from type. The article and headlines on the right show how type can be laid out in visually interesting ways.

gods of rockGods of Rock magazine cover

For the Gods of Rock magazine cover, I decided to really play on the nature of the subject. I wanted to create something that would force people to do a double take when they passed the magazine rack. I believe that the target audience for this type of magazine would really appreciate the humorous nature of this design.

Although the concept is outrageous and off the wall, I still kept the layout professional and organized. By doing this, I let my concept show through, without letting bad design distract from that concept.

watchmen posterWatchmen vintage movie poster

The purpose of this project was to create a poster for a modern movie, that had the style of a movie poster you would see from the 1960's or earlier. I chose to create a poster for the movie Watchmen, and I wanted to use a style that was reminiscent of the art deco posters that were common in the 1920's and 30's. I was inspired by New York architecture, and by vintage posters for movies like Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

After researching the design movement, I was able to incorporate its most prominent elements into my design, including symmetry and radiating sunbursts. Dr. Manhattan was hand drawn by me and painted in Photoshop.

tremor coverTremor booklet

The purpose of this booklet was to educate people about the science of plate tectonics. I wanted to accomplish this in a way that was visually interesting, and reflected the subject matter in the design down to the smallest elements. I wanted to stay away from the "boring text book" look as much as possible.

The requirements of the project were to create the cover from nothing but type, and I turned that limitation into an advantage by staying true to the subject matter.

When designing the inside spreads for the booklet I kept everything as dynamic as possible. I wanted to convey the motion and chaos of this science through the placement of the graphics, text, and headlines. By doing this, I gave the spreads a dimensionality and visual interest that did the subject matter justice. The booklet has twelve pages and these are two of my favorite spreads.

screamerCharcoal drawing

I wanted to include this piece show a little about my fine art skills and my interest in surreal art. I drew this using charcoal and the drawing is completely original. I have always enjoyed drawing and those skills have helped me a lot with my graphic design.

environmental science posterEnvironmental Science poster

For this project I was required to design a poster that would promote the environmental science program at Truckee Meadows Community College, using nothing but type. I was able to push the technique of creating image from type farther than I ever have before.

I chose to create an abstract image of a tree to represent the environment. By creating the roots of the tree from double helices and the leaves from atomic symbols I tied the science in, creating an image that I believe perfectly represents environmental science.

read ad balancedRead! newspaper advertisements

I feel very strongly that reading is one of the most beneficial activities a person can partake in, and I don't think that young people read enough these days. I chose to push my ideas with a series of edgy newspaper ads that advocated reading to a youthful target audience.

This ad was required to balance type and image equally. I used shocking imagery and bold typography to solve the problem effectively.

Read! newspaper advertisements (continued)

For the type dominant ad, I compensated for the lack of an image by laying out the copy in a visually interesting way. The edgy feel of the ad is not sacrificed by the lack of a dominant image, and it may even be stronger as a result.

I found a great graphic to use with my image dominant ad, and in this case I let the typography take a back seat. By doing this the typography was able to subtly complement the graphic.
